Not a unique idea but a fun concept. In folklore it might be a hag or beautiful woman who wear out the master (or their horse), leaving the victim completely exhausted the following day. This version is more a spirit of dead ill-treated horses that punish cruel riders who forced their horse to ride far and hard, or overloaded with heavy burdens. The victim will wake up far more humble in the morning and too tired to continue their journey, giving the horse a well needed extra day of complete rest.

The concept of a night mare is very well exploited in ogre ogre, one of the xanth books. Pretty awesome.

I think the idea of a reanimated horse cadaver constricting bad people is awesome. Dig the art.

Love this picture! Really scary and dramatic. Heard there was a myth that is the reason why its called "nightmare". i don’t remember exactly how it was, but i think it says when you have a nightmare it some kind of evil creature who rides you. If so this picture really catch it!
